'Afterlife' tops int'l b.o. for third straight week

'Money' debuts at 4; 'Love,' 'Inception' holding on at 2 and 3

Constantin Film's "Resident Evil: Afterlife" in 3D maintained its hold on the No. 1 spot for a third consecutive weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit, grossing $24.3 million from more than 5,200 venues in about 48 territories, pushing its overseas gross total so far to $153.1 million.

In general, the weekend offshore played small-ball at the box office with the jury still out about whether the foreign circuit will short the return of Gordon Gekko via 20th Century Fox's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps."

Director Oliver Stone's sequel to his 1987 "Wall Street" premiered day-and-date with its No. 1 domestic debut, and finished fourth on the weekend overseas with $9.3 million drawn from 1,743 screens in 41markets.

Fox said it was it was "thrilled by these early market results," adding that the "Never Sleeps'" overseas rollout included only two of the top 10 foreign markets.

Best territory was Australia where the weekend registered $1.7 million from 283 locales. No. 1 introductions were tallied in Sweden, Taiwan, Holland and Belgium. "Never Sleeps'" foreign openings this week include France, Russia and Mexico.

Also opening overseas day-and-date with its U.S. and Canada bow was Touchstone/Disney's "You Again," director Andy Fickman's female-centric comedy costarring Kristen Bell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Sigourney Weaver and Betty White. Solo Russia bow generated $1.1 million from 331 screens.

Dipping its toe offshore was Village Roadshow/Warner Bros.' "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole." Director Zack Snyder's animation fantasy about a kidnapped barn owl opened at 377 foreign screens in four markets for $1.2 million. Openings in Russia, Australia and Japan are due this week.

"Resident Evil: Afterlife's" biggest new market was France where the latest of the sci-fi/horror franchise starring Ukraine-born actress Milla Jovovich pulled $2.78 million from 408, sufficient to more than qualify as the market's No. 1 weekend title.

A No. 1 second round in Germany (where Constantin Film is located and is "Afterlife's" distributor) generated $2.9 million from 440 locations, hoisting its market cume to $7.4 million. The film also took the top weekend spot via Constantin in Austria. In Japan, the weekend provided $2.8 million from 652 venues in its third stanza for a market cume of $38.3 million.

Jumping to No. 2 on the weekend was "Eat Pray Love," which introduced itself in eight markets in its second overseas round, garnering $12.8 million overall on the weekend from 2,598 screens in 13 territories. No. 1 debuts included Spain ($1.9 million from 337 spots), Switzerland, Israel and Argentina. "Eat Pray Love" opened No. 2 in Germany ($2.6 million from 504 locations), No. 3 in France ($1.8 million from 304 screens) and No. 2 in the U.K. ($1.84 million from 433 sites). Overseas cume stands at $19.9 million.

Ranking third on the weekend was Warner's "Inception," which captured another $10.6 million on its extraordinary foreign run from 6,360 screens in 61 markets. Overseas gross total for director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio stands at $486.4 million.

The weekend's No. 5 title was "Umizaru 3: The Last Message," Fuji TV/Toho's 3D smash hit disaster epic, which opened a huge No. 1 in the market last stanza and drew $8.2 million from 467 locations this round. Japan cume for the film totals $38 million in just the two frames.

"Despicable Me," Universal's family-oriented animation in 3D, grossed $6.5 million from 1,387 locations in 22 territories for an international cume to date of nearly $100 million (cume is $98.5 million). Weekend action for "Me" was sparked by a No. 2 finish in South Korea ($3.4 million from 339 venues for an 11-day market total of $6.6 million) thanks to Chusok holiday turnout. Openings in seven territories including Germany are on tap this week.

Paramount's "The Last Airbender" tallied $6.4 million on the weekend from 2,071 venues in 30 territories. Director M. Night Shyamalan's 3D thriller opened No. 2 in Italy ($2.7 million from 295 locations) and No. 1 in New Zealand. Offshore cume stands at $168.2 million.

Warner's "The Town," the Boston-area heist drama from director-actor Ben Affleck, drew $4.5 million on the weekend from 913 sites in six markets, nudging its overseas cume to $7.1 million. It opened No. 3 in the U.K. with $1.6 million drawn from 321 locations.

Disney's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" drew $4.5 million on the weekend from 2,441 sites in 25 markets for an overseas cume of $144.1 million. Globally the Jerry Bruckheimer production starring Nicolas Cage has grossed about $207 million. A No. 3 Brazil opening – the biggest in the market for any Adam Sandler comedy -- propelled Sony's "Grown Ups" to $3.58 million overall on the weekend from 1,653 sites in 48 markets. Overseas cume stands at $93.9 million.

Sony's cop comedy, "The Other Guys," costarring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, upgraded its overseas gross total to $15.3 million thanks to a $3.6 million weekend at 895 sites in 23 markets. It finished No. 1 in the U.K. in its second weekend, snaring $2 million from 444 spots for a market cume of $7 million.

"Devil," Universal's horror outing coproduced by director Shyamalan scared up $2.8 million from 914 sites in a dozen offshore markets for an early cume of $6.4 million. Russia produced $909,000 from 274 locations. Openings in Iceland and Thailand are on deck this week.

Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3" registered $2.9 million from 2,009 locations in 24 territories, raising its overseas cume to $640 million – making the 3D animation the 10th biggest-grossing foreign release of all time. Globally, "TS3" has grossed $1.050 billion making it the most successful animation title ever at the box office.

"Vampire's Suck," Fox's horror movie sendup, laughed all the way to $2.6 million from 1,382 screens in 14 markets, boosting its overseas take to $23.5 million. A second Italy round drew $1.4 million from 325 sites for a market cume of $4.6 million.

Top-grossing local language newcomer in France was "Hors-la-loi" ("Outside the Law"), director Rachid Bouchareb's drama about Algeria's struggle for independence. The film, which created a stir this year at the Cannes International Film Festival, opened No. 5 at 400 screens for $1.25 million.

Ranking No. 2 in the market was another Algeria-related film, "Des homes et des dieux" ("Of Gods and Men"), about monks versus terrorists, which claimed $2.66 million in its third weekend at 442 locations for a France cume of $10 million.

Maintaining its No. 1 spot for a second South Korea round is Lottle Ent.'s
local-language title "Cyrano Yeonaejojakdan," a romance title about four theater troop members providing dating services for lovelorn clients. Weekend at 484 sites generated $2.8 million, hoisting "Cyrano's" market cume to $8.7 million.

Other international cumes: Focus Features/Universal's "The American," $4.4 million (Universal-handled territories only); Universal's "Get Him To The Greek," $29 million; Lionsgate's "Killers," $45 million; Paramount's "Dinner For Schmucks," $6.4 million; Lionsgate's "The Switch," $11 million; Warner's "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore," $64.7 million; Sony's "Easy A," $2.5 million (after a $900,000 weekend at 169 spots in three markets); Fox's "Hidalgo: Le Historia Jamas Contada." $2.28 million over two Mexico rounds; DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D, $492.6 million; and Universal's "Charlie St. Cloud," $1.8 million.

Also, Sony's "Salt," $167 million; Universal's "Scott Pilgrim vs.tThe World," $12.4 million; Fox's Diary of a Wimpy Kid," $6.1 million; Paramount's "Tomorrow When the War Began," $10.5 million over four weekend in two markets; Fox's "Nosso Lar," $16.4 million over four Brazil stanzas; various distributors including Disney, Universal and Summit International's "Step Up 3D," $105.1 million; Sony's "The Karate Kid," $177.7 million; Universal's "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang," $63.9 million; Fox's "Avatar: Special Edition," $2.016 billion; Universal's "Hanni und Nanni," $6.6 million from three markets; and C.J. Entertainment's "The Man From Nowhere," $39.5 million over eight rounds in Korea only.
