Ahuja gets bail in rape case

Actor accused of assault on housekeeper, must avoid Mumbai

NEW DELHI -- Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was granted bail by the Bombay High Court Thursday following his June arrest on charges that he allegedly raped his 20-year-old housekeeper at his suburban Mumbai home.

The court allowed Ahuja to post $1,200 bail and on condition that he will not leave the country but stay away from Mumbai for three months. Ahuja's defense has denied the charges and his lawyer argued during the bail hearing that the sex was consensual.

“The trial could be over in six months, as it is before a fast-track court,” additional public prosecutor Sangeeta Shinde was quoted as stating. A trial date will be set shortly.

Ahuja made his film debut with 2004's acclaimed arthouse release “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” ("A Thousand Desires") followed by mainstream outings like 2006's “Gangster."
