Airtel launches DTH service

Largest mobile operator sixth to join TV fray

NEW DELHI -- Bharti Airtel, India's largest mobile operator, will launch its direct-to-home television service Thursday under the brand name Airtel Digital TV, becoming the sixth such player in India.

Airtel's 175-channel service will be available in 62 cities, supported by the parent company's established network of 21,000 retail stores.

"The launch of Airtel Digital TV is the culmination of our 'three screens' strategy, which is to be present across mobile phones, computers and TV screens," Bharti Airtel CEO and managing director Manoj Kohli said.

Airtel will offer packages starting at about $62, with installation charges with monthly subscription offers ranging from $2.70-$9.20, pricing similar to rivals such as Big TV.
