Al J English gets Singapore carriage

SINGAPORE -- Middle East news channel Al Jazeera English will launch in Singapore on Friday in a long-anticipated carriage deal with the country's seven-month-old broadband pay TV platform, Mio TV, Al Jazeera and telco SingTel said Tuesday.

Al Jazeera content also will be streamed via SingTel's 3G mobile network beginning in April for about $2 per month.

The 24-hour channel costs just under $4 per month.

The Singapore launch follows a protracted review process, during which Singapore's media authorities and pay TV programrs carefully scrutinized Al Jazeera English's content, according to industry players familiar with the negotiations.

Singapore's Media Development Authority granted permission to carry the channel in December last year.

Mio TV has about 27,000 subscribers compared with dominant pay TV platform StarHub's 504,000.
