The actor said he was "singled out" by a flight attendant but has learned to keep his "phone off when the 1950s gym teacher is on duty.”

Alec Baldwin took to his blog on the Huffington Post to apologize to his fellow passengers just one day after getting kicked off an American Airlines flight for refusing to turn off his smartphone.

Baldwin offered what Bruce Springsteen calls a “guilty but” apology--saying sorry while explaining his behavior as a combination of confusion and being unfairly singled out by a flight attendant.

With the plane delayed at the gate, Baldwin writes, “I then did what I have nearly always done and that was to pull out my phone to complete any other messaging I had to do before take off.”  He writes that other passengers were still using their phones but “this one employee singled me out to put my phone away.”  He put away his phone but noticed others still using their phones as the delay dragged on, Baldwin pulled his phone back out.  “Again, I was singled out by this woman in the most unpleasant of tones. I guess the fact that this woman, who had decided to make some example of me, while everyone else was left undisturbed, did get the better of me.”

Baldwin skips over the details of actually getting thrown off the plane. In fact, unless you read other news reports of the incident, it was unclear from Baldwin's account that he was actually kicked off the plane for refusing to turn off his phone while in the middle of playing popular Zynga game Words with Friends.

Instead, Baldwin focuses on criticizing the airlines for using 9/11 to make flying as uncomfortable as possible.  “One of the big changes, in my time, is in the increase of the post-9/11, paramilitary bearing of much of the air travel business.  September 11th was a horrific day in the airline industry, yet in the wake of that event, I believe carriers and airports have used that as an excuse to make the air travel experience as inelegant as possible.”

Still, Baldwin writes he did learn one lesson, “To keep my phone off when the 1950s gym teacher is on duty.”
