Russia's influence over American politics is the subject of a new podcast from Alex Gibney's Jigsaw Productions, Leon Neyfakh's Prologue Projects and Cadence13.

Whirlwind, which will look at the 75-year tensions between the U.S. and Russia, debuts Sept. 23. With the next presidential election less than two months away, Whirlwind will explore the decisions, mistakes and deceptions that brought America to this point.

The docuseries project builds on Pulitzer Prize winner Tim Weiner's new book, The Folly and the Glory: America, Russia, and Political Warfare: 1945-2020. Weiner wrote and hosts the show, which over 10 episodes will feature interviews with former CIA directors Robert Gates, John Brennan and Leon Panetta, former KGB officers Alexander Vassiliev and Oleg Kalugin and other experts.

"American democracy is on the line," Weiner said in a statement. "Russian political warfare has brought us to the brink. We won the battle in the 20th century – and that brought down the Soviet Union. But Russia's winning today. Their intelligence services helped elect President Trump. They're working to re-elect him today. And that will be a crucial test for the American people. We need to know how political warfare works if we're going to make it through the days to come, and I'm proud to be working with partners like Cadence13, Prologue Projects and Jigsaw Productions."

Cadence 13, which is part of Entercom's podcast network, presents the series. It is executive produced by Cadence13 content chief Chris Corcoran and Underground's Steven Fisher. Neyfakh, who was behind the first two seasons of Slate's Slow Burn and hosts Fiasco on Luminary, is producing alongside Andrew Parsons and Noam Osband from Prologue Projects, in association with Gibney's Jigsaw Productions.

In a statement, Neyfakh called Whirlwind "a disturbing but often dazzling story of a secret war between two of the most powerful governments in world history — a war still going on today, even if no one involved will admit it publicly."

Gibney added, "Tim Weiner and Leon Neyfakh are master storytellers and brilliant journalists, and we are pleased to work with them and Cadence13 to bring this story to light."

New episodes of Whirlwind will be released every Wednesday. Listen to the trailer below.
