In Allegiant, Jeff Daniels' character, David, replaces Kate Winslet's Jeanine as the bureaucratic villain in The Divergent Series.

Like Jeanine, David is not a clear adversary of Tris Prior's from the moment they meet; he is uncovered as one over time. David is the head of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, and he is introduced to Tris, Four and their friends after they travel beyond the wall in Allegiant.

Tris learns that David used to know her mother, Natalie, from before she entered the place Tris grew up in, known by the outside world as the Chicago Experiment.

David is very proud of Tris for being "genetically pure," and he attempts to use her to prove that the experiments he has been running to create genetic purity are working. While Four is with Nita, a new friend he makes at the Bureau, he finds out that David is killing people and then erasing the memory of their children to have them come work for him at the Bureau.

Four's realization that David is evil comes before Tris'; however, once she finds out that David is planning on wiping out the memories of everyone in Chicago, she quickly turns on David as well.

In the third novel, which has been split into two final films, Tris learns that David was in love with her mother. David was Natalie's supervisor — she lived in the Chicago Experiment and gave him updates via her journal and letters. However, when Natalie fell in love with Tris' father, David became jealous and stopped communicating with her. David and Natalie's interactions are not a focus of the third film, either because that plotline is being reserved for the fourth film or because it is being downplayed.

At the end of the third film, Tris and David have been pushed into a tense cliff-hanger moment — will their fates play out in the final film as they did in the final book? Divergent fans will have to wait for Ascendant to find out how circumstances ultimately turn out for the heroine of this series and her foe.
