"My godfather was a sort of writer, philosopher, gay man, extraordinary, and he was a director of theater, and he gave my mum a piece of advice," says Thompson. "I think it applies to everything. He said, 'Onstage, imagine you've got a fire burning in your dressing room.' There's something going on elsewhere; it takes your mind off acting."

Daniel Bruhl co-stars in the adaptation of Hans Fallada's best-seller about a working-class couple battling the Nazi regime.

Emma Thompson, Brendan Gleeson and Rush star Daniel Bruhl have begun shooting on Alone in Berlin, the new adaptation of the best-selling novel by late German author Hans Fallada.

The film follows a working-class couple in Berlin who, during World War II, begin a series of anonymous protests against the Nazi regime. Originally published in 1947, Fallada's novel, based on a real-life couple, was one of the first anti-Nazi books to be published after the war.

The book has been adapted several times for television and screen, including by Alfred Vohrer in Everyone Dies Alone (1975). Alone in Berlin will be the first English-language adaptation of the novel, which was only translated and published in English by Melville House Publishing in 2009, when it became a surprise best-seller.

Thompson and Gleeson star in Alone in Berlin as the couple, Anna and Otto Quangel. Bruhl plays Escherich, a Gestapo inspector on their trail.

Stefan Arndt and Uwe Schott are producing the movie for Berlin-based X Filme together with Oscar-winner James Schamus (Brokeback Mountain), Marco Pacchioni of Master Movie and FilmWave's Christian Grass and Paul Trijbits

French actor-director Vincent Perez is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Achim von Borries, a screenwriter on the 2003 sleeper hit Good Bye Lenin!

Alison Thompson is handling world sales on the project through her Sunray Films operation.

Principal photography for Alone in Berlin kicks off March 27, with location shooting in Berlin, Cologne and Gorlitz in Germany.
