'Alvin' has hot first-day DVD sales

Rodent fever gripped America this week as consumers snapped up 2.6 million DVDs and Blu-ray Discs of "Alvin and the Chipmunks" its first day in stores (April 1), according to distributor 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

That's the highest first-day sales tally of any new home video release so far this year.

"Families have really embraced 'Alvin and the Chipmunks,' " said Steve Felstein, the video division's senior vp of marketing and corporate communications. "We saw it at the boxoffice, we're seeing it on DVD and Blu-ray Disc and we are seeing it on the road with our Get Munk'd Tour. You know you are part of the zeitgeist when you see 3,000 kids show up at a mall for a performance."

The Get Munk'd Tour, a series of 12 mall shows by Alvin and the Chipmunks, is part of Fox's promotional campaign for the DVD and Blu-ray Disc. The concert tour ends April 13.
