Amazon Bringing Prime Instant Video to JetBlue
Airline passengers and Amazon subscribers will be able to stream movies and TV shows from the sky.
Amazon Prime members now have a new way to stream movies and TV shows on the go.
The subscription video service has teamed with JetBlue to allow passengers who are also Prime members to stream tens of thousands of movies and TV shows available through Amazon Prime over the airline's free high-speed broadband Internet. The deal makes JetBlue the first airline to include streaming video in its in-flight entertainment lineup.
JetBlue passengers will also be able to rent or purchase titles from Amazon Instant Video over the airline's broadband Internet connection. Fliers will also be able to purchase and download music, Kindle eBooks and apps and games and earn TrueBlue points when they shop specific categories on Amazon over JetBlue's broadband Internet. Access to Amazon's entertainment library will be built into the JetBlue Fly-Fi Internet hub.
"We want to provide the best digital video experience to our customers and we're excited that, with JetBlue, we will raise the bar in airline entertainment," Amazon vp digital video Michael Paull said in a statement. "We're thrilled that Fly-Fi technology will give Prime members and customers unlimited, on-demand access to the full catalog of titles from Amazon's digital video library while they're in the sky--without the need to rush to download one more episode or movie before taking off, we're helping make airline travel more enjoyable."
JetBlue vp brand and product development Jamie Perry added: "Just like at home, customers will be able to access movies and TV shows from Amazon from 35,000 feet in the sky over our super-fast and free Fly-Fi. Amazon's customer focus aligns perfectly with the experience we have created for our customers, including the best in-flight entertainment, free unlimited snacks and beverages, lots of personal space with the most legroom in coach, and wide, comfortable seating. By teaming up with a category leader like Amazon, we created a unique model where we can offer complimentary broadband internet access."
TV shows available to Amazon Prime members over JetBlue include original series like the Golden Globe-winning Transparent and new series Mozart in the Jungle and Bosch, as well as network series like The Americans, Justified, The Good Wife and Orphan Black.
Amazon and JetBlue's partnership will launch later this year. The airline's broadband Internet will be available on all of JetBlue's Airbus A321 and A320 planes this year and its Embraer E190 planes in 2016.
