AMC gets 'Godfather' films through 2019

Network strikes exclusive deal with Paramount Pictures

AMC, part of Cablevision Systems' Rainbow Media cable networks unit, has struck a deal with Viacom's Paramount Pictures to make AMC the exclusive basic cable home of "The Godfather" trilogy.

The deal covers an unprecedented nine-year run on AMC, the New York Post reported Tuesday. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

The "Godfather" deal further heightens competition between emerging original programming powerhouse AMC and pay TV channels HBO and Showtime. The deal includes the rights to air the three "Godfather" movies and a collection of documentaries and behind-the-scenes footage from Paramount's library on AMC, which will also offer the movies on demand.

"On the heels of last week's Emmy wins, honoring our commitment to original storytelling, we're so pleased to become the exclusive home on cable for one of the greatest original stories ever told on film," AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement.
