American Film Institute and Universal Pictures Extend Partnership to Present “Black Stories Matter” Series

As part of its AFI Movie Club initiative, AFI has teamed with Universal to offer five films for free on digital platforms.

The American Film Institute and Universal Pictures are partnering on a week-long AFI Movie Club event, “Black Stories Matter.”

Following the recent collaboration honoring Spike Lee and his film Do the Right Thing, the series will spotlight Lee’s BlacKkKlansman, Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Malcolm D. Lee’s Girls Trip, Jeff Nichols’ Loving and F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton. The titles will be offered for free Aug. 24-30 on Amazon, Apple, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Dish, FandangoNOW, Redbox, Verizon and Vudu, among other services.

Offered along with the films will be interviews with composer Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman), filmmaker Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip), cinematographer and AFI alum Matthew Libatique (Straight Outta Compton), Oscar-nominated actress Ruth Negga (Loving), and writer Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip) and Ron Stallworth (BlacKkKlansman) and more. Also as part of the series, each day’s film will be the subject of a conversation between film critic Shawn Edwards and filmmakers and talent from the respective selections, among other content.

Launched March 31, AFI Movie Club has announced a classic film a day with a special Hollywood guest as a way of connecting audiences with “movies to watch together when we’re apart” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
