A modern twist on Jessica Rabbit–style glamour for the VF Oscar Party.

Walking the Oscars red carpet is clearly a huge honor, but sometimes it's a little more fun to skip the serious stuff and head straight to the afterparties. Amy Adams’ hairstylist Laini Reeves admits that getting her client prepped for the Vanity Fair Oscar Party is a totally different animal: “I said, ‘Let’s do some sexy party hair.’”

The look she decided on contrasted Adams’ form-fitting Versace bustier dress on purpose. “I created lovely, sexy, beachy waves, and we wanted it to have some tightness on the side, so I did a little dainty braid, like a cornrow. I braided it really tight and tucked it in at the nape — it looks really cool,” says Reeves.

The secret to getting a braid like Adams’ super-tight? “I prefer to braid hair when it’s wet, so after I’d done the waves on the other side, I kept that part wet,” reveals Reeves. “That way I can get in really tight and it dries clean.” Also important is using product on the damp hair before braiding it. “I used ABBA Pure Performance Hair Care Thermal Protect Spray ($19) and Style Spray ($20) together so it would hold nicely, and I finished with hairspray,” she says.

The ultimate effect was modern with a bit of retro glam thanks to a classic beauty icon. Says Reeves: “With the beautiful red wavy hair she looked just like Jessica Rabbit walking out the door. I was in awe.”
