Amy Winehouse Documentary Releases First Official Clip: Watch

A clip from the upcoming Amy Winehouse documentary shows her first song demos came from writing poems.

The first official clip from Amy, the embattled Amy Winehouse documentary set to premiere this summer, has been release, and it details the late singer's songwriting process through the words of her manager, Nick Schmansky.

"We'd recorded quite a few demo recordings, and I started to talk about whether she ever considered writing," Schmansky recalls in the clip, which features close-up footage of Winehouse and some of her handwritten lyrics. "She said she's not sure about writing songs, but she's written a lot of poems. She knew full well she'd been writing songs, but they were very personal songs."

Directed by Asif Kapadia, Amy has been condemned by Winehouse's family, who labeled the film as "misleading and contain[ing] some basic untruths" in a statement issued late last month. The family has accused the film of suggesting that they had done too little to help Winehouse — who died in July 2011 at age 27 — overcome her drug and alcohol addiction.

The documentary is set for a July 3 release in the U.K. and will receive a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival later this month.
