'Angry Birds' Producers Buy Finnish Animation Studio
Kombo, a leading animation studio in the region, is to form a key part in Rovio's next move: turning its 'Angry Birds' franchise into a TV and web series and feature film.
COLOGNE, Germany - Rovio, the Finnish developer behind the Angry Birds gaming phenomenon, has bought Finland's leading animation studio, Kombo, for an undisclosed sum of cash and Rovio stock. Helsinki-based Kombo will switch its operation entirely over to the production of Rovio-based properties. The acquisition is Movio's first major investment since raising $42 million in an initial venture capital push earlier this year. Kombo, a leading animation studio in the region, is to form a key part in Rovio's next move: turning its Angry Birds franchise into a TV and web series and perhaps even a feature film.
"We have had a long and fruitful relationship with Kombo in the past," said Rovio CEO Mikael Hed. "This acquisition is an important step in the execution of our media strategy."
