Animal Kingdom helmer David Michod has signed on to write and direct the film The Operators for Brad Pitt's Plan B, New Regency and RatPac Entertainment.

Based on the late Michael Hastings' incendiary best-seller, The Operators chronicles the rise and fall of General Stanley McChrystal, the commanding general of international and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, and offers a behind-the-scenes portrait of our military commanders, their high-stakes maneuvers and the political firestorm that shook the United States. Pitt already signed on to star as Gen. McChrystal.

He will also produce the movie along with his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner.

New Regency and Plan B recently partnered on this year's best picture Oscar winner, 12 Years a Slave. The companies also entered into a multiyear producing partnership late last year in which New Regency and RatPac Entertainment are co-financing films for Plan B.

Michod, who also directed the upcoming Robert Pattinson-starrer The Rover, is repped by UTA and attorney Alan Wertheimer. The Rover is expected to debut at Cannes next month, though no announcement has been made yet.
