Annecy taps 224 toons

PARIS -- France's Annecy International Animation Festival sorted through 1,826 entries on its way to picking 224 films for screening at its 31st edition set for June 11-16, organizers said Thursday.

The lineup includes 51 short films in competition, 51 in the panorama sidebar, 51 so-called "graduation films" and 71 for a section covering TV series and specials, commercials, music videos and commercial films.

Feature films, which have had their own competition category since 1985, will be chosen later this month as part of an effort by organizers to put greater emphasis on the genre this year.

The fest's parallel MIFA market, the only international audiovisual market dedicated exclusively to animation, will take place June 13-15 as major players from the global animation industry come together for three days of networking and sales.

The festival also plans to welcome Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg with special events and activities planned to draw attention to comic books and animation from those territories.
