APSA, NETPAC fund filmmaker award

Inaugural prize of $5,000 to be awarded in November

LOCARNO, Switzerland -- The Asia Pacific Screen Awards has teamed with cultural association Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) to offer a bursary to emerging Asian filmmakers.

The $5,000 APSA-NETPAC Development Prize will be awarded in November in the lead-up to the Nov. 26 APSA ceremony to one of the filmmakers whose film is in contention for the main awards.

A panel of three APSA judges -- Yuka Sakano (Japan), Mohammad Atebbai (Iran) and Professor Xie Fei (China) -- will choose the winner of the inaugural prize.

"APSA supports the objectives of NETPAC to promote Asian cinema and we appreciate the collaboration we have had with NETPAC since our inception," said APSA chairman Des Power, in Brisbane, Saturday.
