THR's Guide to the 2017 SAG Awards
What you need to know about Sunday's show.
On Sunday night, the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will recognize the best performances for the year in both TV and film.
The honors bill themselves as a "peer award," with only actors voting for actors. All SAG-AFTRA members in good standing are eligible to vote, which means 121,546 peers in the guild will chose the honorees this year. Awards in 13 acting categories are handed out (five in film, eight in television) in addition to awards for outstanding action performances by television and film stunt ensembles, which are handed out on the red carpet during the preshow. Each winner is awarded with an Actor, a 16-inch, solid bronze statuette.
Television shows up for best drama ensemble series include The Crown, Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things and Westworld. For best motion picture ensemble, Captain Fantastic, Fences, Hidden Figures, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight are nominated.
The event takes place at the Shrine Exposition Center in downtown Los Angeles. The SAG Awards transforms the venue into a dinner showroom each year. To make all this possible, it takes more than 700 staff and crew members to transform the area.
A total 247 actors have been nominated for awards this year. Those in attendance will receive dinner and Dove chocolate. Attendees will dine on a Wolfgang Puck-catered dinner of green tea marinated salmon with bulgur wheat, tofu and sweet soy, and spiced chicken with moroccan couscous and saffron aioli. In terms of beverages, Fiji Water, Champagne Taittinger, Sterling Vineyards wines, Chopin Vodka and Clase Azul Tequila will be offered.
The confirmed list of presenters this year include Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Naomie Harris (Moonlight and Hidden Figures), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures), Brie Larsen (Room), Janelle Monae (Hidden Figures and Moonlight), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures). There is no host; the show typically opens up with "Actors Stories," a live segment in which performers describe in ways both funny and sentimental what it means to them to be able to say "I Am an Actor."
The 23rd Annual SAG Awards will air live on TNT and TBS, Sunday, Jan. 29, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET. Red-carpet coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. PT/5:30 p.m. ET.
