Ariel Winter Responds to Critics of Her Revealing Dress
"WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT, PEOPLE."
Ariel Winter is someone who knows how to make a fashion statement.
On Wednesday, the Modern Family actress arrived at a daytime ATAS panel event in North Hollywood, stealing the spotlight in a flashy, cleavage-baring mini dress. Compared to her costars, who arrived in jeans, slacks and sport coats, Winter's club-ready ensemble was a standout to be sure.
Media outlets toed the line between questioning the daytime appropriateness of the starlet's revealing gold number and slut-shaming, with ambiguous headlines like "Ariel Winter Outshines the rest of her 'Modern Family'" and "Ariel Winter Puts on Peep Show... with VERY Casual Costars."
Winter, though, didn't stand for the between-the-lines criticism. The vocal actress, who has used social media on several occasions to address detractors questioning her revealing looks, wrote on Instagram, "Why the f—k does anyone care that I didn’t dress casual like everyone else for a panel? [sic]."
She continued, "Why can’t people just let other people feel good about themselves and do what they want? WEAR WHATEVER YOU WANT PEOPLE! As long as you feel good about yourself that’s what matters... Don’t let anyone stifle who you are and how you express yourself."
The discrepancy shines a light on the pitfalls of personal expression on the red carpet, and how it can backfire in the social media age. Earlier this week at the Met Gala, some Twitter users threw fits about celebrity guests who weren't "on-theme" enough for the avant-garde dress code, suggesting that they shouldn't have been allowed to simply wear what they wanted.
Winter has landed on worst-dressed lists before, but seems to be toeing the line that young stars should have the courage to wear what they want, when they want, and detractors be damned.
