ASCAP to present Voice award to Blige

Mary J. Blige will be presented with the ASCAP Voice of Music Award during the organization's 20th annual Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

The fete will take place June 25 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Previous Voice of Music honorees include Garth Brooks, Diane Warren and Jimmy Webb.

"Mary J. Blige" is not only the 'Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,' but also a guiding light," said ASCAP president/chairman Marilyn Bergman in a statement about the six-time Grammy winner.

"Through all of her struggles, she was determined to find and maintain her own musical voice. By doing so, she has become one of the most successful R&B/hip-hop writer/performers in the country and has paved the way for many others."

In addition to the Blige presentation, ASCAP will salute its top songwriters and publishers of 2006. As part of that salute, the organization will also make a special presentation to its songwriter of the year.

Past recipients of that honor include 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, Alicia Keys and Timbaland.
