Behind the Olsen Sisters' Casual CFDA Awards Hair
Bendy waves, beachy texture and dry shampoo for Mary-Kate, Ashley and Elizabeth.
Considering their covered-up, all-black ensembles at Monday night’s CFDA Awards, it would be easy for Mary-Kate, Ashley and Elizabeth Olsen to come off as a bit conservative. Of course, with their styling the end result was far from staid. The trio’s longtime hairstylist, Mark Townsend, made sure their locks were the perfect casual foil to their clothes.
When it came to Mary-Kate, Townsend says, “We wanted her hair to look like she came directly from the beach.” To accomplish that, he diffused her hair with the blow dryer to keep her natural wave, then spritzed Ouai Wave Spray ($26) and added some imperfect waves using the different size barrels on his R Sessions Tidal Waver, a hot tool he used on all three girls. He also teased the crown of her head, set a deep side part and sprayed her roots with Dove Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo ($4.49) for extra hold.
For her other half, Ashley, the star stylist focused on letting her hair dry naturally so her own waves would be left intact. He did define them a bit with the iron, using a figure-eight method, after adding a couple drops of Dove Regenerative Nourishment Serum-in-Oil ($6) to her damp mane. Townsend also sprayed her with Dove’s dry shampoo, in large sections, to get “a gritty, voluminous texture. We weren’t afraid of a little fuzz with this look,” he says.
The pair’s little sister, Elizabeth, went for a half-up look, but instead of her signature “hun,” a half-up bun, Townsend says, “we opted for a sleek and healthy half ponytail.” On dry hair, he sprayed Dove dry shampoo at the roots for fullness, secured a high half ponytail at her crown with three Blax elastics, to give it more grip and lift. Before finishing her off with Elizabeth and James Nirvana White Dry Shampoo ($28) for the scent and shine, Townsend added a slight bend to the ends of her hair with the waver, using the larger barrel. Three girls, one tool, three unique looks.
