Astral sinks funds into docus

Broadcaster investing $585,000 into films

TORONTO -- Canadian broadcaster Astral Media said Wednesday that it will invest $585,000 in homegrown feature documentaries.

Montreal-based Astral said it will support two or three documentaries annually through its Harold Greenberg Fund, a longtime supporter of feature film production here.

The investment comes as part of a benefits package established after last year's acquisition of Standard Broadcasting, a move that made Astral the country's largest radio broadcaster.

The CRTC triggers mandatory expenditures after any industry takeover to indicate public benefits from ownership restructurings.
