Athens Production Company Heretic Launches Sales Arm
Heretic Outreach will focus on southeastern European films on the international festival circuit
Athens-based Heretic Productions, co-founded by producers Konstantinos Kontovrakis and Giorgos Karnavas, is launching a new sales arm focusing on films from southeastern Europe.
The two co-produced 2009's Wasted Youth and Greece's Oscar nominee Boy Eating the Bird's Food, which premiered at Toronto in 2012. Kontovrakis produced Standing Aside, Watching, which premiered in Toronto and was in Berlin's Panorama section last year.
The new division, called Heretic Outreach, will be the first regional sales arm highlighting films produced or co-produced by Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey, as well as their home country of Greece, It will offer consultancy and festival strategy to independent filmmakers too.
Ioanna Stais, who was previously at Paris-based indie sales Wide Management, will come onboard as head of festivals and sales.
With a small slate of 5-6 films per year, the company will focus on getting pics into the festival circuit and increasing visibility with an eye toward selling into traditional and VOD distribution channels.
"Respecting its roots in the world of local film production, Heretic Outreach wishes to provide its films with the same care and devotion that was reserved for the films that have been produced by the team," said Kontovrakis.
The new division will "uphold the team's shared vision for inspiring cinema and their inherent drive to spread unique voices and stories from this part of Europe to the rest of the world," he added.
