'Atonement' helmer, Uni in 2-pic deal

Universal and Working Title Films have signed "Atonement" director Joe Wright to a two-picture deal.

Wright is in production on "The Soloist," on which Universal is partnering with DreamWorks and Working Title. The movie, which stars Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr., is separate from the agreement.

The deal keeps Wright firmly in the arms of Working Title and Universal. His 2005 feature debut "Pride & Prejudice" was produced by Working Title along with StudioCanal and released by Universal's specialty division, Focus Features. Awards contender "Atonement" was made by the same players.

"Atonement" received seven Academy Award nominations last week, including best picture, and won best motion picture drama at the Golden Globes after leading the field with seven noms. The movie also is up for 14 BAFTA Awards, including best picture and director.

Wright began his career in British television.
