Aussie Film Institute to name homegrown fave

'Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,' 'Gallipoli' contend for top title

SYDNEY -- The Australian Film Institute will mark the 50th anniversary of its awards by honoring Australians' all-time favorite film, the organization said Monday.

The winner of the one-off award will come from a shortlist of five films chosen through an online poll conducted by the AFI during the past few months.

The shortlist consists of musical comedy "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" (1994), comedies "The Castle" (1997) and "Muriel's Wedding" (1994), the drama "Lantana" (2001) and the war drama "Gallipoli" (1981).

Australia's Favorite Film will be announced at the annual AFI Awards, regarded as the pre-eminent awards in Australian film, which are set for Dec. 5 in Melbourne.
