Austria eyes ORF privatization

Government considering partial sale

COLOGNE, Germany -- The Austrian government is considering a partial privatization of public broadcaster ORF, following a disastrous financial year that saw ORF overshoot its budget by 100 million euros ($127 million).

The most likely partner in this scenario would be RTL Group.

Anke Schaferkordt, head of RTL's German operations, has expressed an interest in flagship channel ORF 1.

RTL also has the ultimate insider in the form of chief executive Gerhard Zeiler. An Austrian native, Zeiler got his start at ORF and ran the broadcaster in the 1990s.
