Author appeals 'Catcher in the Rye' spinoff decision

NEW YORK -- A Swedish author has asked a federal appeals court in New York to let him publish a book he claims is a parody of J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye."

Fredrik Colting was blocked by a federal judge earlier this month from publishing in the U.S. his novel "60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye."

Colting said in his appeal filed Thursday that the judge erred in concluding that his book infringed Salinger's copyright.

Colting says his book is a commentary and parody of Salinger's novel.

A character called "Mr. C" is presumed to be Holden Caulfield as an old man. It also features an author named "J.D. Salinger" who contends with his character's enduring fame.
