'Avatar' rings up $25 mil Friday

'Sherlock Holmes' takes second at boxoffice

James Cameron's sci-fi actioner "Avatar" remained perched atop the domestic boxoffice through New Year's, fetching an estimated $25 million in U.S. and Canadian coin Friday.

That pushed cume for the Fox-distributed 3D pic's to $308.8 million at the start of its third weekend in release. "Avatar" looks likely to win the three-day holiday session's boxoffice derby with $60 million or so in what would be a three-peat No. 1 performance in weekend boxoffice rankings.

Warner Bros.' Robert Downey Jr. starrer "Sherlock Holmes" was second among all Friday grosses with $14.9 million, pushing cume for the Guy Ritchie-directed actioner to $117.2 million since its Christmas bow.

Unspooled on Dec. 23, Fox's family comedy "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel" registered a third-best $13 million on Friday for a $133.7 million cume.

Universal's romantic comedy "It's Complicated" -- starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin -- was fourth on the day with $7.1 million and a $47.5 million cume at the cusp of its soph session.

Warners' leggy Sandra Bullock starrer finished fifth, with its $4.5 million daily tally producing a magical cume of $200.9 million.

And Paramount's George Clooney starrer "Up in the Air" was sixth on the day, with $4.1 million and a $37.8 million cume. No pic is opening in wide release this weekend, but prestige films such as "Up in the Air" will be closely watched for market traction amid ongoing awards season campaigns.
