Average Movie Ticket Price Lowers to $7.96 in First Quarter

The cost of going to the cinema usually falls following a glut of 3D titles during the year-end holidays.

The average cost of a movie ticket fell 4.7 percent in the first quarter of 2014, to $7.96, compared to a hefty $8.35 in the prior quarter, according to the National Association of Theater Owners.

It's typical to see a drop-off in the average ticket price following the year end-holidays, when there is a proliferation of 3D titles driving up the number.

There was a slight increase in the average ticket price, or 0.3 percent, year over year. In the first quarter of 2013, the average cost of a trip to the cinema was $7.94.

The average ticket price for 2013 was $8.13.
