Average ticket price up 3% on last year
NATO records 540.8 million admissions during the May-August box office summer
U.S. moviegoers paid an average of $7.71 for movie tickets in the third quarter, up 3% from a year ago but down 1% from the previous quarter.
That brought the year-to-date cost of a movie ticket to an average $7.85, the National Association of Theatre Owners said.
The quarter-over-quarter decline was attributed to a greater number of kids-priced and matinee-priced admissions in the July-September quarter than in the previous three months.
Based on NATO's average ticket price, there were 540.8 million admissions during the May-August box office summer, the trade group said.
A year earlier, NATO calculated the average U.S. ticket price at $7.47. Second-quarter tickets cost an average of $7.88, the organization said.
