'Away' makes b.o. strides in Canada

TORONTO -- Sarah Polley's "Away From Her" has crossed the CAN$1 million ($952,000) boxoffice mark in Canada, domestic distributor Mongrel Media reported Thursday.

The Canadian actress' feature directorial debut, "Away" bowed May 4 nationwide here after a world premiere at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival.

The drama about romance in a seniors' home that stars Julie Christie, Olympia Dukakis, Michael Murphy and Wendy Crewson has also taken in more than CAN$2 million ($1.9 million) at the U.S. boxoffice, where Lionsgate is handling the release.

Hanway is handling international sales for "Away," which is based on the Alice Munro short story "The Bear Came Over the Mountain."
