'Awkward' Creator to Launch Inner-City High School Comedy on Netflix
'On My Block,' a coming-of-age comedy about high school students living in a rough inner city, will debut in 2018.
Netflix announced on Thursday that the streaming service will release new comedy series On My Block from Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft. Iungerich is best known as the creator of MTV's teen comedy series Awkward. She previously worked as a writer on ABC Family's 10 Things I Hate About You.
Gonzalez and Haft’s writing credits include the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me and work on the first season of Empire.
On My Block is described as a coming-of-age comedy that follows the life of four street-smart friends who experience the highs and lows of going to high school while living in the tough inner city.
Teen Wolf actor Diego Tinoco stars as Cesar Diaz. He will be joined by The Get Down's Jason Genao as Ruby Martinez and Disney's Liv and Maddie actress Jessica Marie Garcia as Jasmin. Newcomers Sierra Capri and Brett Gray have also joined the cast as Monse Finnie and Jamal Turner, respectively.
The first season will include 10 half-hour episodes and is expected to premiere on the streaming service in 2018.
