BabyFirst crawling onto Canadian TV


TORONTO -- U.S.-based BabyFirstTV, the 24-hour commercial-free cable channel for babies and toddlers, on Wednesday said it will be carried in Canada on the Bell ExpressVu satellite TV and Rogers cable platforms.

Having first launched stateside in May 2006 on the Dish Network and DirecTV, the BabyFirstTV channel will be available to Canadian digital TV viewers as a premium pay TV channel for CAN$4.95 a month.

Sharon Rechtor, executive vp business development and BabyFirstTV's founder, said the Canadian rollout follows similar entries in the U.K. on British Sky Broadcasting, on Showtime Arabia in the Middle East and in Mexico as well.

Rechtor said that BabyFirstTV, which offers interactive educational content for babies, toddlers and parents, aims to build on existing demand in the marketplace for baby-themed DVDs.

She added that the U.S.-based channel anticipates further expansion in Europe and eventually into the Asian market, either as a premium channel or as part of a basic cable package.

The major shareholders for BabyFirstTV are New Regency Prods. and equity investors Kardan N.V. and Bellco Capital.
