The next British Academy Film Awards will take place on Feb. 8, 2015, shortly ahead of the Oscars on Feb. 22.

LONDON – The next EE British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) will take place on February 8, 2015, the British academy revealed on Friday. The date slot again puts Britain's top film honors just weeks ahead of the Oscars, which will next be held on Feb. 22, 2015.

As usual, the event will take place at London’s Royal Opera House and be broadcast by the BBC.

The film awards reward the best work of any nationality seen on British movie theater screens during the preceding year.

The BAFTAs were once held after the Oscars, but in 2001 organizers decided to shift the event several weeks before. They have since been viewed as a key indicator of how the Oscars might shake out.

This year's best director award was won by Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, while Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave walked away with best film.

Both top BAFTA recipients repeated their successes in the same categories at the Oscars a few weeks later.
