Barco snaps up High End Systems

BRUSSELS -- Belgian imaging technology group Barco on Tuesday announced the $55 million purchase of U.S. digital projector company High End Systems as part of its strategy of reinforcing its dominant position in the fast-converging video and lighting sectors.

Barco makes equipment ranging from digital cinema projectors and broadcast studio screens to giant stadium and rock concert displays. It said that High End Systems will be directly integrated into its media and entertainment division. Based in Austin, High End Systems posted sales of $44 million in 2007.

Originally founded as the Belgian American Radio Corp. in 1934, Barco, headquartered in the northern city of Kortrijk, has about 3,600 employees worldwide, and last year posted sales of $1.15 billion.
