Barendrecht Award honors late producer

HK$50,000 prize offered by foundation and dev fund

BEIJING -- A new award for rising Asian filmmakers will commemorate the career of the late Wouter Barendrecht, the producer and Fortissimo Films co-founder who is credited with helping such greats as Wong Kar-Wai and Iwai Shunji reach a global audience.

Competition for the HK$50,000 ($6,438) Wouter Barendrecht Award, honoring the producer who died suddenly last April, is open to directors of three films or fewer who are participating in the upcoming Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum from Mar. 22-24.

Established by the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation and the Film Development Fund, the award winner will be announced on Mar. 24 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market.

The award raises the value of the prizes given at HAF to about HK$595,000 in cash and value in-kind. The other prizes include the HAF Awards, the Technicolor Asia Award and the Paris Project Award.
