'Battlefield 3' Sets Sales Record for Electronic Arts
The third in the best-selling war series has sold five million units in just a week.
After just one week, the video game Battlefield 3 is setting records for its company, Electronic Arts. According to internal estimates, the war-themed action game has sold five million units in its first week, making it the fastest-selling game in EA's history.
The game's emphasis on its multiplayer experience meant users were logged online, making use of the company's servers, which recorded the companies highest-ever usage rates.
During the game's first week in release, EA recorded 73 million savior kills, 48 million revives and the destruction of 67 million vehicles.
In a statement, Patrick Soderlund, Executive Vice President of the EA Games Label said, "From Tokyo to Los Angeles, Sydney to London, millions of fans have been playing all weekend long -- we are overwhelmed by the global response to Battlefield 3."
The game, which puts viewers in the head of soldiers in a massive warzone, received positive reviews, charting at 85 on console and 90 on PC on the critical aggregation site Metacritic.
The Battlefield franchise has been around since 2002 and has sold 50 million units to date. Electronic Arts is one of the largest game companies in the world, which also makes The Sims, Madden NFL and Mass Effect.
