BBC, CDI to do the 'Bhangra'

Former BBC Films head David Thompson to produce

NEW DELHI -- BBC Films and Compact Disc India Ltd. announced Thursday a co-production pact for the live-action feature "Blame It on the Bhangra."

Set in London, "Bhangra" will be directed by U.K.-based Paul Angunawela and produced by former BBC Films head David Thompson via his banner Origin Pictures.

The film centers around a young British Asian girl who disguises herself as a boy to break into the macho world of bhangra dancing. The film's budget and release schedule was not given while other details like its star cast will be announced later.

Angunawela's credits include 2005's "Library Majnu" ("Library Romeo") produced as part of the Bollywood Shorts Season for BBC4.

CDI said Lionsgate will distribute the film in the U.K.

While CDI has various animation projects in the pipeline, including a planned feature based on Brazilian soccer legend Pele, the company recently announced plans for a foray into feature film production.
