After first being reported early Thursday morning, the situation was fixed a few hours later.

The BBC seemed to suffer a New Year glitch a little early, with the broadcaster citing "technical issues" as its vast online presence went down on Thursday morning.

Reports started emerging that the BBC News website, plus its iPlayer streaming platform, main website and all services offered from its domain were suffering from a widespread outage from around 7 a.m. GMT, with several notable personalities, including Stephen Fry, tweeting about the issue.

The BBC press office said in a tweet that it was currently working to fix the problem, which had not affected its TV or radio output, although it offered no indication as to when normal services might resume.

The BBC later confirmed that the problem had been the result of a "cyber attack" that had attempted to "overwhelm" its website, and that most services were returning to normality.
