BD Live lures buyers

82% of prospective Blu-ray users interested in features

A new study from the NPD Group suggests that the new BD Live technology's Web-enabled special features could be a big lure for consumers to make the switch from standard DVD to Blu-ray Disc.

A survey found 82% of consumers planning to buy either a set-top Blu-ray Disc player or a Blu-ray-enabled Sony PlayStation 3 were interested in such potential BD Live features as selecting different camera angles (47%), downloading additional content (41%) and buying products tied to the movie (20%).

"In the near term, the key value of BD Live should be to generate excitement at retail, to give retailers demonstration points for consumers that will make BD stand out from standard DVD and up-converters," said Russ Crupnick, vp and senior analyst with NPD.
