'Beauty' begins shooting in Singapore

SINGAPORE -- Production started here Wednesday on "Untold Beauty," the latest film by MediaCorp. Raintree Pictures that stars Taiwan's Golden Horse best actor nominee, Fan Chih Wei.

The supernatural romance set in the Chinese embalming trade is the first Singapore film to be presold to France and the French-speaking territories based on the script. "It is a vote of confidence for us," the film's producer Mabelyn Ow said.

The S$1 million-budgeted film, shot in Mandarin, also stars rising Singaporean actress Jesseca Liu and is directed by first-time director Roy Lim, who was previously in film distribution. Director of photography is Daniel Low, fresh off the local boxoffice hit "881," and music producer is Roy Li Fei Hiu, a composer who has written hits for Andy Lau and Jackie Cheung.

Filming will be completed in January and will be released in the third quarter of 2008.

The film is co-produced by Raintree, Moving On Pictures, Hwa Yea Multimedia and RAM Entertainment. Daniel Yun, managing director of Raintree, said he hopes the movie's unusual subject matter will help it break out into the international market.

Raintree recently co-produced the award-winning "The Home Song Stories" that stars Joan Chen and Qi Yu Wu.

Lim said he hopes to make a "Chinese film" rather than a Singaporean one because the film's subject matter of embalming is essentially a Chinese custom.
