The 'Pitch Perfect' star will head the cast in the transfer of his hit off-Broadway show, one of the most critically acclaimed new musicals of the 2015-16 season.

It's official: Ben Platt, who earned stellar reviews in Second Stage Theatre's off-Broadway premiere in May of Dear Evan Hansen, will reprise the title role when the new musical transfers to Broadway later this year.

Written by Steven Levenson, with music and lyrics by the rising-star team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (A Christmas Story, Dogfight), the show focuses on a depressed adolescent outsider caught up in an unintended lie that reverses his position in the high-school popularity stakes until the situation spirals out of control.

While the long-rumored transfer plans were confirmed late last month, no casting was announced at the time. However, given the superlative notices garnered across the board for the original musical and for Platt in particular, as well as the near-certainty of a Tony nomination for the actor next season, there seemed minimal chance of his not sticking with the show.

In addition to Platt, a regular in the Pitch Perfect screen franchise, off-Broadway cast members Laura Dreyfuss, Rachel Bay Jones, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Mike Faist, Will Roland and Kristolin Lloyd also will make the move. They will be joined by Michael Park, returning to the role he originated in the show's pre-New York run at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.

Directed by Michael Greif (Rent, Next to Normal), Dear Evan Hansen will begin previews at the Belasco Theatre in November, on a date to be announced, with its official opening set for Dec. 4. Lead producer of the show on Broadway is Stacey Mindich.
