Rooney Mara's 'Mary Magdalene', Benedict Cumberbatch Thomas Edison Biopic 'The Current War' Get Release Dates
The Weinstein Co. stakes out awards season openings for both the historical and biblical dramas.
A year after it released Garth Davis’ Oscar-nominated Lion, The Weinstein Co. will bring the director’s second feature, Mary Magdalene, to the screen Nov. 24 — the new film, starring Rooney Mara as the biblical heroine, will effectively open on the same weekend on the calendar that TWC used to launch Lion last year.
Mary also stars Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus of Nazareth and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter. It tells the tale of how Mary became one of Jesus’ followers. The film was written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, and after opening in limited release in November will expand throughout December.
Staking out another spot on the awards season calendar, TWC also announced today that it will release The Current War, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, on Dec. 22.
The Current War stars Cumberbatch as inventor Thomas Edison and Shannon as George Westinghouse as the two battle over how to market electricity in the late 1880s. Directed by Alfonso Gomez‐Rejon (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) and written by Michael Mitnick, the film also stars Katherine Waterston, Nicholas Hoult, Tom Holland, Matthew Macfayden and Tuppence Middleton. After its Dec. 22 limited opening, the film will receive what’s described as a moderate expansion Jan. 19.
Also joining the TWC 2017 lineup is Wind River, written and directed by Hell or High Water’s Taylor Sheridan. The thriller, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, stars Elizabeth Olsen as a rookie FBI agent who teams up with a local game tracker, played by Jeremy Renner, to solve the murder of a girl on a remote Native American reservation. The film, which also stars Gil Birmingham, Jon Bernthal, Julia Jones, Kelsey Asbille and James Jordan, will open in limited release Aug. 4 with an expansion Aug. 11.
