Beresford named APSA jury pres.

Aussie director to preside over Nov. 11 awards

CANNES -- Australian director Bruce Beresford has been appointed president of the International Jury for the second annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards (ASPAs), to be held on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Nov. 11.

In making the announcement Friday at the Cannes Film Festival ASPA chairman Des Power said, "Bruce Beresford's remarkable body of work spans cultures and continents and it is particularly appropriate to appoint him to head the APSA Jury in 2008, the year in which he is making a film set in China, Australia and the United States."

The ASPAs honor the work of filmmakers across more than 70 countries, reflecting one third of the earth and half of the world's film output.

The awards are a collaboration between CNN International, UNESCO and the International Federation of Film Producers Association. The idea is to honor films that best reflect their cultural origins and demonstrate cinematic excellence
