Berlin: Arms Dealer Doc Shooting For Deals

U.K. sales and distribution banner Kaleidoscope picks up world sales duties for “The Notorious Mr. Bout,” the documentary that took its world bow during this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Berlin — Documentary The Notorious Mr. Bout, about the lavish world of Viktor Bout, arguably one of the most prolific arms dealers the world has seen, is to be on the dealing table at the EFM.

Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has inked a deal for worldwide rights, outside North America, for the feature length documentary which debuted at Sundance in the world documentary competition last year.

Directed by Tony Gerber (Full Battle Rattle) and Maxim Pozdorovkin (Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer), the documentary was made with participation from BBC, VPRO (Netherlands) and DR (Denmark), and follows Bout, a Russian entrepreneur, war profiteer, aviation magnate, arms smuggler and amateur filmmaker.

Until three days prior to his 2008 arrest on charges of conspiring to kill Americans, Bout kept the camera running, documenting a life spent in the grey areas of international law.

Dubbed the "merchant of death" Bout was portrayed by Nicolas Cage in Lord Of War.

The sales deal was negotiated by Cinetic Media on behalf of the filmmakers and by Caroline Stern for KFD.

KFD director of iInternational sales and acquisitions Stern said; “A mix of first person biography and social history, the documentary plays like an international thriller that keeps us asking how and why until the finish.’

Kaleidoscope plans to release the film theatrically in the U.K. later this year.
