Berlin: Asian Brilliant Stars Unveils Nominees for Expanded Second Edition
This year's lineup includes a diverse selection of prestige titles and commercially successful action flicks, ranging from Chinese blockbuster 'Wolf Warrior 2' to Japanese courtroom thriller 'The Third Murder.'
Asian Brilliant Stars, the emerging film awards ceremony that runs in tandem with the Berlin International Film Festival, has unveiled its jury and nominees for an expanded second edition in 2018.
Modeled after the long-standing European Shooting Stars talent platform, the event seeks to bring greater attention to established and emerging Asian actors, directors, producers and screenwriters. The winners of the Asian Brilliant Stars will be unveiled at a red-carpet awards dinner in Berlin during the festival in February.
Some 19 films from across Asia have been included this year. The lineup includes a diverse selection of critically acclaimed dramas and commercially successful action flicks, ranging from Chinese blockbuster Wolf Warrior 2 to Japanese courtroom drama The Third Murder to the smash-hit Thai high school thriller Bad Genius.
"The selection has been made on artistic and commercial criteria to represent the best of Asian films," the organizers said in a statement.
From these titles, the jury will pick individual winners in the following categories: best actor, actress, director, screenwriter, producer and best new Asian talent. The framework represents an expansion from last year's, when just three categories were honored.
This year's jury includes controversial South Korean director Kim Ki Duk, Manfred Wong, former president of Hong Kong Film Awards and veteran Japanese producer Shozo Ichiyama, whose wide-ranging career has included films by Japan's Takeshi Kitano, Taiwan's Hsiao-Hsien Hou and Chinese art-house star Jia Zhangke.
The Asian Brilliant Stars project is organized by Asian Film & Television Promotion, the Beijing Film Academy and Movie View magazine, with support from the Berlin International Film Festival.
"Asian Brilliant Stars is not only an award ceremony, but a platform to promote Asian films and create a bridge between Asia and the world, said Richard Shen, general secretary of Asian Film & Television Promotion. "If Asian culture wants to gain influence in tomorrow’s world, it also needs an internal dialogue."
