Berlin biz strolls down new walk of fame

Marlene Dietrich is first to get a star

BERLIN -- Berlin is going Hollywood on Friday with the unveiling of the first star in a new German film walk of fame.

Berlin International Film Festival director Dieter Kosslick, Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit and Rainer Rother, head of the Berlin museum for film and television, will take part in the ground-breaking ceremony for the "Boulevard of the Stars" at 5 p.m. Friday on the median on Potsdamer Strasse.

Together, they will unveil the first of the Boulevard's stars: German diva Marlene Dietrich. A further 39 names will be decided by a jury and presented at an official ceremony this summer.

It has been a long trek to this Boulevard. The idea for a Berlin walk of fame was floated back in 2004 but organizers initially had trouble securing financing for the project.
