Berlin: 'Curtain Call' Sells Wide for Culmination

The murder mystery, set in 1930s London and starring Colin Firth, Gemma Arterton, Paapa Essiedu, and Simon Russell Beale, has pre-sold across Europe and Latin America ahead of Berlin's European Film Market.

A week before the official kick-off of Berlin's European Film Market, Culmination Pictures has closed a slew of international pre-sales for Curtain Call, a period murder mystery from Anand Tucker’s (Shopgirl, Hilary & Jackie) featuring an all-star British cast including Colin Firth, Gemma Arterton, Paapa Essiedu and Simon Russell Beale.

Culmination closed deals for Curtain Call with Squareone Entertainment for German-speaking Europe, with Notorious Pictures for Italy, Hagi Films for Poland, Tanweer for Greece, Lusomundo for Portugal, Sena for Iceland, Hagi Films for Poland, Cineart for Benelux, and Shoval Films for Israel. California Filmes took rights in Latin America, Selim Ramia & Co. for the Middle East, Empire for South Africa, and Benchmark Films for Taiwan. The company expects to soon announce a deal for Spain.

Sony Pictures International Productions earlier acquired the film for the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Curtain Call, based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Quinn, is set in the London theater scene circa 1930. The plot around the feared theater critic Jimmy Erskine (Beale), his loyal assistant (Essiedu), and the newspaper owner (Firth) who wants to get rid of the critic, and an actress (Arterton) who has been devastated by Jimmy's excoriating reviews. But Jimmy's determination to survive leads the other characters to be caught in a web of blackmail, deceit, and murder. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal) adapted Quinn's book for the screen.

Curtain Call is set to begin production in the U.K. later this year. Jolyon Symonds is producing the film under his Fearless Minds banner. Executive producers are Mark Gordon and Beth Pattinson for Mark Gordon Pictures, Tom Butterfield and Harry White for Culmination Productions, and Patrick Marber. Sony Pictures International Productions will co-produce.

Berlin's all-virtual 2021 European Film Market runs next week, March 1-5.
