The fest's final daily issue includes a look at why dealmakers in Berlin are leaving happy, five ways the festival can improve and Anne Hathaway's latest project.

The Hollywood Reporter has released its fifth and final Berlin International Film Festival daily issue, which features an inside look at why international buyers are encouraged by the return of bigger projects, five ways the fest can get its mojo back amid rising criticism, and a peek at a Dee Rees project Anne Hathaway is circling.

Berlin Business Bounces Back

As the European Film Market enters its final days, dealmakers are largely pleased with the return of bigger projects with promising box-office potential. The big, near-studio level productions — indie films that don’t look indie — are the kinds of movies that have driven the Berlin market in the past. But those titles have been few and far between lately. There were no obviously commercial film packages on offer at the American Film Market in November and even last year’s Cannes was tepid. "Lighten Up!"

Dieter Kosslick’s upcoming departure and the recruitment of a new festival director for the 70th Berlinale in 2020 is seen as an opportunity for reinvention. Three of THR’s reviewers have put together five suggestions for the festival’s future.

Hathaway's Next Move

The next project from Mudbound helmer Rees is coming together nicely. Oscar winner Hathaway is in negotiations to star in The Last Thing He Wanted, adapted from Joan Didion's best-selling 1996 political thriller about a Washington Post journalist thrown unexpectedly into the dangerous world of arms dealing. Marco Villalobos penned the screenplay, which is the thrilling story of one woman, alone and unrelenting in a race against time.
